REPUBLIC OF KAZAKHSTAN GEOGRAPHICAL SITUATION AND ADMINISTRATIVE DIVISION
The Republic of Kazakhstan is situated in the central part of the Eurasian continent. Its territory stretches from West to East for 3,000 kilometers and from North to South for 1,600 kilometers covering an area of 2,717,000 km2. In the West, Northwest and North Kazakhstan borders on the Russian Federation. In the South and Southwest are the Republics of Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. In the Southeast and East, there is China. The border length of Kazakhstan is more than 15,000 kilometers.
According to active administrative and territorial division, Kazakhstan consists of 19 regions and 223 districts. There are 83 cities and 204 townships. The regions are: Akmola, Aktubinsk, Almaty, Atyrau, Eastern Kazakhstan,Taraz, Zhezkazgan, Western Kazakhstan, Kokshetau, Kostanai, Northern Kazakhstan, Semipalatinsk, Taldy-Korgan, Torgai, Southern Kazakhstan, Mangistau, Pavlodar, Kzyl-Orda, Karaganda. The capital city was Almaty. Now from 1998 the capital of Republic is Astana.
